André Knecht was born in Switzerland in 1959. His academic and professional background include Electronic Music studies at Padua University, Italy, and a 7-year stint as a Sound Designer, Recording Engineer, Music Supervisor and composer with the Swiss Broadcasting Company (SSR), where he also hosted both radio and TV shows. In 1983 he moved to California where he began a twin-track career in audio engineering and marketing at Warner Bros. Records. With a solid grounding in analog technologies, he embraced the digital era at its dawn – adopting MIDI and Digital Audio Workstations as they first appeared. (A Pro Tools user since v1.0, he still makes use of his beloved Moogs and Studers, etc.) Today, he is active as a freelance engineer and producer, as well as a consultant, instructor, beta-tester, and technical editor for book projects in the audio field. Andre Knecht is happily married and teaches many of the classes in the Producer Department that require his mastery of all things audio technical.

Andrew Murdock

Andrew Murdock, also known as Mudrock, is an American record producer specializing in the rock and metal genres. He is perhaps best known for producing Godsmack’s Godsmack andAwake albums. More recently, he has produced successful American metal band Avenged Sevenfold’s 2nd album Waking the Fallen, as well as albums for Slunt, The Riverboat Gamblers, Powerman 5000, Eighteen Visions, Unloco and Alice Cooper, as well as 50 Foot Wave’s latest EP, Power and Light. Mudrock is based in Los Angeles and has his own studio in partnership with Scott Gilman called The Hobby Shop, and he teaches the Audio Engineering Courses at LACM.

Dave Beyer is an in-demand professional drummer and educator in the Los Angeles area. He has toured, performed live and/or recorded with such artists as Melissa Etheridge, Christopher Cross, Jim Messina, The Motels, Wilson Phillips, America, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Gregg Allman, Michael McDonald, Loggins & Messina, Stephen Bishop, Buzzy Feiten, Jango and Debra Davis.

Dave is currently touring and recording with Christopher Cross, and played on the recently released in-concert DVD, “Christopher Cross: A Night in Paris.” Dave is also on Cross’s new CD, “Dr. Faith,” as well as the “30 Rock” Soundtrack and “Café Carlyle Sessions.” Dave is also tours with Wilson Phillips and Jim Messina. Dave has performed at major venues worldwide, including the Greek Theater, Universal Amphitheater, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Woodstock, Madison Square Garden and Royal Albert Hall.

Dave also stays busy as a studio musician, and as a producer who runs his own studio, Beyer Recording. He has played on such TV shows as 30 Rock, The Tonight Show, Late Night With David Letterman, Extreme Home Makeover and Ally McBeal; films including Princess Diaries II and Happy Endings; as well as numerous TV spots and commercial jingles. Dave has also written for Modern Drummer magazine.

Lynn Fanelli began her singing career at the tender age of 5 years old when she performed with her father on his record release. She has recorded and toured with Delaney Bramlett, who taught George Harrison to play slide guitar and Eric Clapton to sing and produced Clapton’s first album. She was on staff with record producer Ray Ruff at Oak Records, recording and arranging vocals for all of their country artists. While with this label, she sang background vocals and created vocal arrangements for Pat Boone’s CD Ready to Rock, among others. She toured with movie actress Connie Stevens, sang with The National In Choir on the Oasis CD Dig Out Your Soul in 2008. She has toured, recorded and/or performed with Hal David, Jon Bon Jovi, Wild Cherry, Terry Ilous, Spencer Davis, Percy Sledge, Deniece Williams, Billy Paul and Taste of Honey, among many others. She has recorded with many renowned producers, among them Jim Steinman (Meatloaf) and Giorgio Moroder (Blondie) and David Briggs (Neil Young). Her voice has been heard on national jingles and television and movie soundtracks such as Nickelodeon, Melrose Place, Days of Our Lives, and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, among others. Most recently, Lynn performed with Jackie DeShannon on the heels of DeShannon’s 2010 induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. She was on board in the vocal section for DeShannon’s recorded performance for the Grammy archives in 2012.

Ken Song, who holds a Master of Music in Guitar Performance, graduated with honors from USC in 1998. He has studied jazz guitar with Joe Diorio and Larry Koonse and classical guitar with William Kanengiser. Since college, Ken has been working steadily in the Los Angeles music scene, playing sessions on motion pictures, TV commercials and audio recordings. In 2005, Ken was a featured performer at the Santa Barbara Jazz Festival. Ken also plays in local clubs and restaurants with his own trio. Notable artists that Ken has played with include Bruce Eskovitz, Bill Churchville, Randy Drake, the Dick Grove Orchestra, Ricky Lawson, Gregg Bissonette, John Ferraro and Todd Johnson. In late 2005, Ken recorded his first solo album Goin’ Wes, which was released in early 2006 on the Primrose Lane Music label and features Luther Hughes, Paul Kreibich and Llew Matthews. We asked LACM alumni and current LACM instructor Peter Boskovich to answer a few questions about his role at LACM and what it was like studying at the school in Los Angeles. He also offers some great advice and tips for any music student or individual thinking of pursuing their music degree.

2. You attended LACM, and graduated from the bass department. When was that and can you tell us more about your experience? 

Graduated 2004. My experience in the bass department and as a student in general was a very special one. I was fortunate to be surrounded by other very eager and determined students who pushed and inspired me to give it my all to tackle the curriculum and absorb the information as quickly as I could. I remember the atmosphere of ‘friendly competition’ that drove us to play our best in every class. By the end of my enrollment I can honestly say I was ready to get out and start gigging, although I have had a few bruises and bumps along the way, but overall I felt prepared. I’ve played with many players all over the city coming from all over the world and I couldn’t have done it without the preparation I received at LACM.

3. What advice do you have for young musicians looking to get their music degree at LACM?

Don’t hesitate for one, and when you decide to commit to this institution as your place of learning, give it more than 110% like I did and you won’t regret a thing. I still work with many of the dear friends I met as a student while at LACM and continue to grow as a musician in the many professional settings afforded me by them. The musical circles I work in all have many ties to the school even though the musicians might not have studied here. LACM is a great stepping-stone to get out into the city and start making musical relationships. Also, it is important that you learn how you absorb information while in school, as we all learn in different ways. I feel the curriculum along with the ensemble workshops are structured in a way that allows each student both the time and varied situations to absorb the material in ways that accommodate their levels of understanding.

4. What is the best part about studying music in Los Angeles?  

It’s LA man! Come one. I love this city with all of its diversity and varied cultural offerings. There is no excuse for boredom in a town like this. World-class players left and right, and myriad of venues in which to do so. You can find inspiration any night of the week with all that is going on musically in this town.

5. Why did you start playing music? 

I started playing music because I hated football so much.  It was exhausting and it hurt a lot when I’d get leveled on the field.  Music was much nicer, and I was much better at it.  You also don’t have to wear those funny uniforms and instead get to look cool in front of a lot of people.

6. Tell us about your current musical projects etc.:

I’m actively gigging as a sideman in several jazz trio’s and quartets at the moment. I have a project called Splice The Mainbrace with fellow teacher/instructor Jackson Allen that has started to play out. We are both very excited about it and feel it an honest representation of our musical tastes and ambitions at the moment.  

I am also (and this might sound strange) working on an album of my own original tunes with me singing while playing chordal accompaniment on the bass. I’ve explored chordal approaches to bass playing, and have also developed a deep appreciation for the songwriting idiom. Between these two projects, and an endless list of things to practice and prepare for, I’m very excited about life and where it might take me.

Tim’s training began in Newark, Ohio at the age of five. His early influences included everything from Folk, Jazz, R&B, and pop, to the great Ohio State Marching Band. After a move to Southern Oregon, he continued studies in drum set, classical, and marching percussion eventually winning several awards including two consecutive state solo contests. Tim then attended the University of Oregon (BM) studying percussion and drum set with Professor Charles Dowd, was section leader of the Oregon Marching Band Drumline, and a member of the Green Garter Band. He continued post graduate studies at the University of Southern California (MM) with Professor Eric Forrester and Ndugu Chancellor. Tim went on to perform for audiences throughout the world as percussionist with grammy nominated artist Josh Groban. He has also performed and/or recorded with Herbie Hancock, Elton John, David Foster, Chris Botti, Angelique Kidjo, Ashley Maher, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Andre Manga, Gary Novak, Bakithi Kumalo, Lucia Micarelli, John Williams, Joshua Bell, Angie Stone, and Bela Fleck. Tim performs on four Josh Groban DVD concert recordings including “An Evening in New York”, “Awake”, “Live at the Greek”, and “Josh Groban Live in Concert”. Film and television recordings include “NCIS”, “JAG”, “The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio” (Dreamworks), “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” (Fox), and “Lucky” (FX). Television appearances include PBS “Soundstage”, Sundance Channel “Live from Abbey Road”, Good Morning America, The American Music Awards, The Tonight Show, Conan O’ Brian, and Ellen. Tim is on faculty at the Los Angeles College of Music teaching drum set and percussion. He is currently touring with the band “Incendio” in support of their new CD “The Shape of Dreams” performing concerts throughout the U.S. Tim plays Taye Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, L.P. Percussion, Yamaha timpani, Roland V-Drums, REMO Drumheads, and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.

Matt Piper

Well-known among music software nerds for his work with Propellerhead Reason music production software, Matt Piper is the author of Reason 4 Ignite and Using Reason’s Virtual Instruments. More recently, he has been authoring video courses for During his four years as Propellerhead Product Specialist for Line 6, Piper conducted clinics on all aspects of music production at music schools, recording studios, and convention centers all over the United States, and produced numerous how-to videos demonstrating recording techniques and software tips and tricks, as well as marketing videos. Piper plays several instruments including keyboards, guitars, upright and electric bass, and a variety of ethnic wood and bamboo flutes, and also produces electronic music.

Kasia Livingston

KC has been writing songs since the age of ten. Initially, KC was discovered by Grammy award-winning producer David Foster early in her career. Erik Kapernick is a professional recording engineer, producer, composer and keyboardist in the Los Angeles area. Native to nearby San Diego, Erik has studied classical piano performance and technique since age 5; performing in numerous recitals, competitions and special events.

In 2003, upon finishing his Bioengineering degree at University of California, San Diego, Erik joined the faculty at La Jolla Piano Institute and began training under director Marden Abadi – pupil of Artur Rubinstein. In 2005, Erik also began working as a research assistant in the molucular cell biology laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He is published on two papers and was awarded a patent following a large-scale experiment with c. elegans.

Erik’s insistent interest in music, computing and engineering led him to Pasadena in 2012 to pursue a degree in Music Production at Los Angeles College of Music. After graduating at the top of his class in 2014, he was awarded a position with the LACM faculty. Erik currently instructs piano and production courses and engineers for studio classes. He also plays piano and keyboard for live performance and studio recording.
